Smooch is a hero. When the 2-year-old border collie saw two kayakers in distress Sunday morning, she barked until her owners came outside and saw the overturned boat floating in the river next to their house on Long Island.
“If it wasn't for her, we wouldn't have seen it,” Randy Ronback tells WCBS-TV.
Newsday says Ronback jumped in his boat, rowed several hundred yards and rescued the couple, one of whom was said to be "gasping for air and exhausted."
Both were treated at a local hospital and are said to be OK. As for Smooch, she's a reluctant hero. "She doesn't think she did anything special, I don't think," Ronback tells Newsday. "But she really did. Maybe she'll get an extra cookie or something."
