New research based on DNA samples from prehistoric hounds, as well as genetic studies of modern dogs and wolves, suggests that two populations of grey wolves – separated by thousands of miles and thousands of years – may have begun the connection that turned Canis lupus into Canis lupus familiaris.

    Hi

Genetic evidence is also ambiguous. Mitochondrial DNA has been used to show that dogs arose from Eurasian gray wolves, and the high levels of mtDNA diversity in East Asia have been used to estimate that dogs originated in that area between 5,400 and 16,300 years ago.12,13Other genetic markers show that dogs appear to be more closely related to Middle Eastern wolves than to wolves in other areas. However, these interpretations do not account for the possibility of interbreeding between dogs and wolves in the Middle East, East Asia or elsewhere. Advances in genetic technology and analysis methods are allowing scientists to test more complicated models of dog origins, including the possibility that multiple wolf populations contributed to modern dogs either through multiple domestication events or through repeated interbreeding.14,15,16
